Top Reasons to Attend Fishers City Council Meetings

I started attending Fishers City Council meeting this spring. At first I found them quite droll, dry, and scripted. After about two months of attending, doing some online research, and also attending the planning commission meetings, I FINALLY hit my stride and began to look forward to seeing Mayor Fadness, the city attorney, City Council Members, and other like-minded people at the meetings. I love Fishers, it's an entrepreneurial city and a great place to live, work and play!

Over the last six months, I've seen so many amazing people in our community recognized. I saw a Fishers Police Officer receive an award for years of service, listened to presentations by developers hoping to build new housing developments in Fishers, witnessed our Police Chief request funding for new and much needed gun racks for vehicles (he found 50% of the funds in his budget), and watched young interns talk about their experiences in a leadership program.

More importantly, I have watched angered Fishers residents voice their opinions about construction that (they feel) will negatively impact their neighborhood and property values. Also, I have witnessed our residents describe the aftermath of construction completed when a variance to policy was made. Again, more residents who were not happy. In both situations, I became monumentally aware how important it is to attend City Council and Planning Commission meetings, read meeting minutes online, and peruse agendas. As residents, taxpayers, and stakeholders, we must be alert and informed!

These are just my experiences. There many great reasons to go to City Council Meetings. All politics is local, so you might as well learn about what's occurring in your backyard. It is our civic responsibility to participate, represent, and contribute to the betterment of the community.
